Roman Castles Tour
With Food and Wine Tastings
The Castelli Romani are a group of small villages located on the Albani hills about 30 km south of Rome. The Albani hills were created geologically between one hundred and twenty centuries before the foundation of Rome after great volcanic eruptions, which defined a series of hills in the middle of a very large plain (including the famous 7 Hills of Rome) Many craters became lakes and two of them still exist: the lake of Albano and the lake of Nemi. All the area was named, Roman Castles in 1300 when, due to a serious economic crisis deriving from the Pope's transfer to Avignon, many inhabitants of Rome took refuge in the castles of rich feudal families. Little by little small villages were built around the castles, although over the centuries the fortified castles have been destroyed or completely transformed into private summer residences, all these small towns are still named Roman Castles. With our 4-hour Tour we will go around the main villages of "Castelli" to reach Castel Gandolfo, on Lake Albano, where there is the summer residence of the Popes and Nemi, on the homonymous Lake. In both places we will stop a little more and you will have your wine and food tastings. This is a pleasant and relaxing excursion.
