Civita di Bagnoregio
and Orvieto Tour

Panoramic view of Civita di Bagnoregio

Civita di Bagnoregio was founded by the Etruscans about 2500 years ago on a spur of tufaceous rock. Over the centuries, a phenomenon of erosion has affected geomorphologically the area, mainly composed of clay soils, creating gullies. Now the town is almost isolated on the top of this rock and it is believed that if the erosion will continue, at the base of the rock spur, it will be difficult to save it, for this reason Civita di Bagnoregio is called "The dying Town”. But someone ironically says: this town has been up there for thousands of years as suspended in time, perhaps it is "The city that will never dies". Today, actually, only 16 inhabitants live there although there are hundreds of tourists who visit this unique town every day. Like Civita di Bagnoregio, Orvieto is also an ancient Etruscan town built on a tufa cliff, but it is a much bigger town than the first one and has no problems of erosion. The city has a medieval core and boasts a cathedral that is a real masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture.
